Yesterday, both the NYT and the Guardian published editorials advocating for Snowden’s safe return to the US. Others are weighing in on whether Obama should give him clemency or some reduced punishment to get him to return, while other dimwits suggest he should be hung from the nearest tree.
Here’s the reality as I see it. Snowden, if he chose to return to the United States, would never be seen or heard from again. Period. He would spend the rest of his life in a maximum security prison cleaning bathroom floors with a toothbrush. Period. Advocating for his safe return under Obama is equivalent to believing a Fairy Godmother will stop by your house tonight, wave a magic wand and make you gobsmackingly rich. Ain’t going to happen. Period.
The NSA’s all encompassing spying on everyone, everywhere, everyday is a product of authoritarian policy. Think Hitler. Once people grasp the true depth of Snowden’s releases, they would never be dumb enough to suggest Snowden return to the US to face American jurisprudence; especially from the current occupant of the WH who is hellbent on walling off all of the US government from the People.
That said, it was a pure pleasure to watch Greenwald nail one of the dimwits in this latest interview hosted by Jake Tapper. Enjoy –
